About

The challenge is to create a short, engaging “explainer” video using fundamental techniques such as shape layers, effects, masks, kinetic typography, and keyframe animation. Each video should explain an everyday concept in a way that is clear, concise, and easily understandable, as if you were explaining it to a five-year-old.

In the context of the assignment, I sought to base my project on a relatively simple topic and expand upon it in a whimsical and visually creative way without deviating from the main object of creating an explainer video intended for five-year-olds. Through the many affordances that come with detailing the various aspects of magnets, I utilized a moderate amount of tools that I learned within Adobe After Effects to convey my own vision. Ranging from the implementation of 3D objects, animation, masking, adjustment layers for posturize and CC Block Load, and various other tools to help create an aesthetically fun and informative video.

The visual and conceptual aesthetic finalized my vision and storyboard as a means of accentuating the primary subject while highlighting various design aspects into a concise and fluid composition. Overall, the ELI5 project was an interesting and engaging task that prompted me to learn an entirely new software and grasp the concepts of motion design.
